Maxillaria tenuifolia "Red" IN BUD/FLOWER NOW
Maxillaria tenuifolia
species - Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica
Does it smell like toasted coconut or suntan lotion or something else? You can decide, but on a warm day in Spring or Summer, Maxillaria tenuifolia s as pleasantly fragrant as they come!
These are small starts of one of our most popular orchids. They can be left in pots or mounted on a wide variety of acceptable mounts (e.g. cork, tree fern, redwood and fresh water driftwood*), but rather quickly, under the right conditions even these little plants can turn into quite a specimen,
Ideally, Maxillaria tenuifolia would like temperatures of about 50-85 degrees, but we have grown it where the night temperature occasionally drops to 40 degrees. Best protected overhead from frost. Otherwise grow the plants in semi-bright or filtered light, because they are planted in NZ moss, keep them moist, not soggy, with regular additions of fertilizer Spring-Fall with a bit of a drier Winter rest. Flowers of 1.5-2" are produced in Spring and Summer. It is possible that some of these plants will bloom in 2020.
*Oceanic driftwood is generally toxic to orchids as is saturated was a variety of salts. It takes a long time to leach these salts out.
