Coryanthes macrantha
species -Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela, et al
certainly one of the most fascinating and unique orchids you can find. Coryanthes macrantha is one of the so-called "Bucket Orchids". The 6" flowers have glands that drip water into the pouch-like lip in order to "coerce" bees into pollenating them.
Coryanthes have the reputation of being somewhat difficult to grow, but we have grown and flowered Cory. macrantha successfully in shady conditions with temperatures between about 65 to 85 degrees night to day. Good humidity and air circulation is very helpful. The flowers are Summer blooming and occur on pendant stems, much like Stanhopeas, one or two at a time and, like Stanhopeas are short lived
