Mediocalcar decoratum FS 4"
species - Papua, New Guinea
Orchid growers sometimes agree that many of the most unusual orchids available come from Papua and New Guinea! Mediocalcar decoratum is no exception! The longlasting, .25" flowers are borne mostly Fall-Spring and may cover the plant as shown in the image at the bottom right.
This plant likes shady, cool, moist conditions and does well in New Zealand sphagnum moss. They are planted in terracotta because, when wet, it helps effect cooling during warm Summer months. Avoid allowing the medium to dry out, moist medium is essential for keeping Mediocalcar happy. We grow this one in a greenhouse that occasionally drops to the mid and lower 40's during the Winter months.
Mediocalcar would do well in a terrarium setting if it isn't allowed to take over!
