Bulbophyllum lobbii "Black" 2"
Bulbophyllum lobbii
species - Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines
Fragrant (pleasant) 3-4' flowers occur mostly in Summer on single stems at about the height of the leaves. The plants would like shade with temperatures from 60 or above to around 80 or so night to day. Water regularly with the aim of keeping the roots just moist (i.e. not continually soggy). Use a liquid or water soluble fertilizer at half strength twice a month*.
LIMITED!! NEAR BLOOMING SIZE, BUT NOT CURRENTLY IN BUD OR FLOWER!
NOTE: We are not sure what the variety name "Black" actually means- probably very dark ventral sepals. Two possibilities are shown to the right.
NOTE 2: The mystery is solved! The larger picture at the top, and on the lower left are recent photos of Bulb. lobbii "Black".
GROWER'S NOTE #2: "Orchid Fertilizer". In reality, there is no commercially produced plant food specifically for orchids. All the commercial fertilizers contain the same 3 elements in different proportions: nitrogen (the major growth element, for protein synthesis), phosphorus (for roots, leaves and stems) and potash-potassium (for disease and stress resistance and flowering). You don't have to buy "Orchid" fertilizer just because it's on the label. The colors are usually dyes used to make them more attractive or to differentiate different formulations.
