Epidendrum ruizianum
species - Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia
This is a cool to cold grower that, in nature, in its countries of origin, grows as a terrestrial on steep rocky slopes in full sun. We've grown our seedlings successfully with night temperatures around 65 and days to 85 degrees. When mature, the plants can exceed 42" in height. The terminal spike is long, turning sharply downward, to about 24", bearing 3-4 "sub-stems" as shown, each 6-8" long bearing 30 to 50 - 1 inch fragrant flowers.
Our plants are `12" above the pot edge and are growing rapidly. They are planted in New Zealand pine bark. You can grow them as we do (for faster growth) or cooler in bright light watering and fertilizing regularly (see our fertilizers in the "Supplies" section).
