Cymbidium erythraeum
species - Assam, Himalayas, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, China, Vietnam
This is a cool-cold growing species that is listed as an epiphyte or sometimes lithophyte (grows on trees or rocks, etc.) which is unusual to consider at first until you realize that mosses and leaf material can gather on both trees and rocks to such an extent that it's virtually soil-like. They grow just fine in traditional Cymbidium mixes. The plants like dappled light. The plants grow to about 30" tall and produce stems up to 48" with around 16 3" fragrant flowers held mostly above the leaves. Blooming time is December - March. Care for mature plants as you would with most Cymbidiums, that is water and feed heavily about April to October, then relax the fertilizer and water only as needed.
