In Brazil, there are many named varieties of Laelia purpurata, but one of the favorites is the pink lipped Laelia purpurata carnea. These are stout plants sometimes standing 16" or more out of the medium. We have grown the successfully with night temperatures that dip into the low 40's and days that top 90 degrees. They do well with bright indirect light. Allow mature plants to dry slightly between waterings, add a liquid or water soluble fertilizer to the watering regimen twice a month and give mature plants a bit of a drier rest from about November - February. In many places that don't freeze regularly, Laelia purpurata can be grown outside with some protection from direct sun.
Flowers usually occur Spring to Fall, have an anise-like fragrance, are 6-10" in size.
