Vanilla planifolia 5" pot 4 ft. staked
species - West Indies, S. Florida, Central and northern S. America
This is the commercial Vanilla plant grown around the world to produce vanilla seasoning. It is so valuable that in Madagascar, it is guarded by armed men. Coca Cola once tried to replace vanilla with the artificial flavoring "vanillin" in their famous soft drink, calling it "New Coke" and it was met with such disfavor that they returned quickly to the original recipe.
Vanilla planifolia is just one of over 100 other species of the genus that are found mostly in wet, humid, tropical areas around the world. As this suggests, the plants would like warm conditions (65+-85 degrees night to day) with regular watering (keep moist) and applications of fertilizer and especially while they are small, good humidity. They would also like indirect or semi-shady light.
Flowering size plants are usually in excess of 8' and grow vine-like. Flowers are about 2-2.5" across, do not open widely, are short-lived, fragrant (but not like "vanilla") and are borne on short stems of up to 20 opening successively. Pollination should take place in the morning when the flowers first open.
Our plants are actively growing, about 48" tall and are planted in 5" scotch pots on a 46" stake..
