Yes, it is an orchid! No, it isn't dying!! This is one of the so-called "leafless orchids" and though it occasionally produces a short lived leaf, the photosynthetic processes normally carried on by leaves, are handled by the mass of roots. During Fall and Winter months the plant can produce a short to foot long stem of 1/2" fragrant flowers up to 20 in number.
The plants like dappled light, warmish conditions (65-85 degrees night to day), good humidity and frequent watering/misting (at least three times a week here). Be sure to add a liquid or water soluble fertilizer on a regular basis (see ours in the "Supplies" section)
These are fairly recent imports, but roots are in active growth.
