Oncidium ampliatum
species - Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Trinidad
Some call this the tortoise-shell orchid because of its rounded, flattened pseudobulbs. it is a long-time favorite of orchid growers with its cloud of 1" flowers on a branched stem of up to 4' in length. Oncidium ampliatum is a warm-hot grower (65-85 degrees night to day), but would rather like bright indirect light. The plants bloom Fall-Spring putting up stems from the developing new growth.
This Oncidium doesn't like overly wet roots and in repotting choose something that will drain quickly that also resists breaking down quickly. A medium sized, good grade orchid bark with coarse perlite would be an example.
Some people grow Onc. ampliatum as a mounted specimen or in a basket as they tend to outgrow azalea-type pots that also become too deep and water retentive (perhaps bulb pans would be a solution).
