Catasetum pileatum 'Jumbo Green Gold' 4" NFS
Catasetum pileatum 'Jumbo Green Gold'
species - Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador
This is a warm-hot growing species with an incredible flower. Flowers may exceed 4" and are fragrant. Most orchid are monoclinous, that is, they have both male and female reproductive features. Not so with the Catasetums which usually bloom with either male or female flowers, rarely monoclinous. Female flowers are very different (those of another species are shown at the bottom left).
Catasetum pileatum is native to an area with a long wet season and a short dry one. In culture the dry season is usually about November-January and is basically defined by the dropping of the year's foliage and the beginning of new growth. During the "rest" (dry season) withhold water to just enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling and use no fertilizer. Some growers actually take them to bareroot status until new growth begins.
