Monnierara Millennium Magic 'Witchcraft' FCC/AOS 4" NFS
Monnierara Millenium Magic 'Witchcraft' FCC/AOS (Catanoches Midnight Gem X Mormodes sinuata)
This is one of the famous "Black Orchids" and, as you can see, it is related to Catasetum, Cycnoches and Mormodes all of which have some characteristics in common. The most obvious is that the plants normally lose their leaves toward Fall, or the end of the season. They may or may not still be in bloom at the time. These plants are heavy feeders while they are growing so adding a liquid or water soluble fertilizer to the watering regimen is essential (see ours in the "Supplies" section). Some growers even use a slow release type fertilizer. The plants like bright indirect light and warm temperatures (65-85 degrees night to day). Good air movement and humidity are also helpful, especially in reducing the appeal of the plants to spider mites, a common pest of thin leaved orchids.
IMPORTANT NOTE: After the leaves fall, reduce watering to just enough to keep the bulbs from shriveling and eliminate fertilizer. Depending on a number of variables, wait until new growth begins to repot (hopefully as new roots are just beginning) and to resume heavier watering and feeding.
Our plants are still growing for this season. When mature, the plants can produce stems of up to 20 - 3.75" flowers and again, when mature can produce 2-3 stems at one time.
